Most bug-out bag lists are written to sell gear. This one is written to save your life. We surveyed FEMA CERT trainers, Red Cross disaster responders, and military veterans with survival training to build the most honest, prioritized BOB list available online.

What a Bug-Out Bag Actually Is (And Isn't)
A bug-out bag (BOB) โ also called a go-bag, 72-hour bag, or get-home bag โ is a pre-packed bag containing everything you need to leave your home quickly and survive for 72 hours (3 days) without access to normal infrastructure.
A BOB is NOT:
- A bag you pack during an emergency (you won't have time)
- A "bug out forever and live in the woods" kit
- An excuse to buy expensive tactical gear
- A kit that weighs 60 lbs (you need to actually carry it)
โ
The Weight Rule: Your loaded bug-out bag should not exceed 25% of your body weight. For a 170 lb adult, that's 42 lbs maximum. Most experienced preppers target 25โ35 lbs. If you can't carry it for 5 miles, it won't save you.

What NOT to Pack (Common Mistakes)
- Heavy tactical gear you've never worn: If you haven't trained with it, it's dead weight in a crisis.
- Months of food: BOBs are for 72 hours. Extra food weight means less speed and endurance.
- Items requiring special skill to use: A suture kit is worthless if you've never sutured. Carry what you can actually use.
- Glass containers: They break. Everything in a BOB should be in durable plastic.
- Only digital documents: Your phone dies, it floods, it breaks. Paper copies only.
- Overly specialized tools: Multi-tools > individual specialized tools for limited space.
- Unnecessary weapons: In most civilian evacuation scenarios, a firearm adds significant legal risk and weight without proportional benefit. Research your local laws and context carefully.
Bag Selection by Budget
- Under $60 โ 5.11 RUSH12, Condor Summit, or similar: Functional, durable enough for most scenarios. Not glamorous but gets the job done.
- $60โ$150 โ Mystery Ranch Scree 32, Osprey Talon 33: Better ergonomics for long carries, more organized, more durable.
- $150+ โ Mystery Ranch 3-Day Assault, Gregory Baltoro, or mil-spec bags: Built for serious field use. Justified for those who hike regularly or plan extensive BOB use.
โ
Pro Tip: Pack your BOB and carry it for 3 miles. You'll immediately discover what's unnecessary and what you forgot. Do this before any real emergency, not during one.
